eth icity & identity, a blast from the past

Mostly an informational note: On the lines of the recent discussion of how
ethnicity functions, Ed Schortman wrote in 1989 or 1990 an article which
appeared in American Antiquity. The article used the concept of salient
identity rather than ethnicity, though we recognize them as closely related
if not the same concepts. Schortman's premise was to emphasize the variable
nature of identity among classic Maya, especially in relation to power
formations and territorial alliances (rival centers etc...). It may be
worth taking a look a deeper look at this idea in a context broader than
archaeology.
