Mike, this is an addendum to my previous posting, and relates to
insider-outsider views of a culture. When I was in Samoa a few years
back with Happy Leacock, a Samoan said to us, "Why don't you American
anthropologists study your own culture and leave us alone." Our answer
was that he and any other Samoan was certainly freeto study U.S.
culture,and that an anthropologist should be free to study any culture.
I don't agree that both an insider's and outsider's views are necessary;
sometimes one, sometimes the other, sometimes both. Ruby
