My understanding, although I'm not sure I could document it quickly, is that the
label "politically correct" and its variants was created by the right to refer
derisively to liberal / "leftist" attempts to address genuine linguistic and
cultural concerns. It is interesting that they use a label to attack attempts
to change attitudes and behavior by changing labels. There's a lot of
linguistics and anthropology here, I think.
You are right about media bias: anyone who thinks the mainstream US media is
"leftist" probably has trouble getting their shoes on the right, I mean,
appropriate feet (I think this is from Dennis Miller or Bill Maher: it's not
mine!).
