well as helpful information. By choosing to stay subscribed after receiving
this message, you signal your compliance with the enclosed guidelines.
Please view this not as moderation, but instead as a requirement for
maintaining the best atmosphere for the list. We welcome your participation
and suggestions!

This document has five parts: an Overview of Anthro-l, Rules
and Guidelines, Subscription Information, the list's Administration,
and a statement on Copyright and Limit of Liability.

I. OVERVIEW OF ANTHRO-L

Anthro-l is a "list", an electronic bulletin board dedicated to
friendly and scholarly discussion of anything pertaining to anthropology
and its study.

The list is run on Listserv software at the University at
Buffalo, in Buffalo, New York, USA. Since its inception in 1987, Anthro-l
has grown rapidly. It currently has about 1400 subscribers of all ages
and backgrounds and from over 46 countries. Subscription is open to all.
While only subscribers may post, non-subscribers are encouraged to send
relevant messages to the List Manager (see address at end of file).

Anthro-l is a forum for the announcement and discussion of
anthropological news, research, theories, publications, meetings, exhibits,
and events, and for dialogue on matters relating to the discipline itself.
We welcome contributions from anthropologists, professional or avocational,
and from our colleagues in other fields.

The day to day operations of the list are carried out by the List Manager.
Matters of policy and conduct are overseen by a Board of Governors. The Board
is composed of present/past managers and owners of the list.

II. RULES AND GUIDELINES

After some soul-searching, we have decided that subscription to
Anthro-l is a privilege and not a right. While there are laws protecting
freedom of speech, international fora such as sci.anthropology provide an
un-moderated outlet for popular opinion. Instead, Anthro-l is a friendly
place for the posting of information and the discussion of topics of
anthropological interest. The following rules are intended to help provide
an atmosphere that is conducive to such behaviour.

Post at your own risk as you are legally liable for what you say.
Please consider the sensibilities of all those who will read your words!
(It is always better to delay sending what may be interpreted as an
unfriendly message in case you later change your mind.)

A) RULES-
The following conduct is unacceptable on Anthro-l. (For more information,
contact addresses are provided at the end of this message.)

i) any activities which are illegal under United States or International
Copyright Law;

ii) conduct which is unethical by the standards of the American
Anthropological Association (such as plagiarism);

iii) distribution of copyrighted materials (This includes the forwarding
of messages without permission to Anthro-l from another forum, or from
Anthro-l to another forum. Forwarding of public announcements such as
conference notices or job openings are excusable since they are intended
for wide dispersion.);

iv) transmission of materials that the Board feels are malicious, un-
necessarily abusive, threatening, obscene, harassing, libellous or have a
reckless disregard for the truth (the "public figure exemption is NOT
accepted here!), or that contain ad hominem attacks;

v) distribution of viruses/Trojans/worms, chain letters, "spam",
irrelevant messages, unsolicited advertisements, or messages the Board
feels simply are irrelevant to the list's stated focus (Those wishing to
post advertisements must first contact the List Manager for permission.);

B) SANCTIONS-
At the discretion of the Board, violators of these rules will be
cautioned and/or removed from the list. This process is subject to
appeal, but the Board's decision is final. (For more information,
contact addresses are given at the end of this file.)

III. SUBSCRIPTION INFORMATION

Anthro-l is automated. Messages posted to the list are forwarded
to every address on the subscription list. Most subscription matters can
be handled by the Listserver software. If you are no longer receiving
messages from the list, send QUERY ANTHRO-L to review your subscription
options. Note that if your email address changes, the Listserver may no
longer accept your commands, even though you still receive messages. If
your email directory becomes too full, or your mail-server goes down,
many error messages are received by the List Manager who may then decide
to terminate your subscription. If this occurs and you have troubles re-
subscribing, or if you have any other problems with your subscription,
simply contact the List Manager (address listed at end of file).

A) POSTING MESSAGES-
Send all messages to ANTHRO-L@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU. Be sure to include a
informative SUBJECT: line.

B) SUBSCRIPTION OPTIONS-
Send all commands to LISTSERV@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU. Do not include extra
words, such as a signature. No SUBJECT: line is required and case is
insensitive.

i) To subscribe, send SUB ANTHRO-L First-Name Last-Name. You will
receive a message requesting confirmation.

ii) To resign, send UNSUB ANTHRO-L.

iii) To find out your subscription options, or to determine if you are
still subscribed, send QUERY ANTHRO-L. You will receive a message
listing your options. These may be changed using the following commands:

SET ANTHRO-L MAIL
(regular message delivery)
SET ANTHRO-L NOMAIL
(temporary message interruption)
SET ANTHRO-L DIGEST
(daily compendium of all messages with a table of contents)
SET ANTHRO-L INDEX
(daily listing of message subjects and senders only)
SET ANTHRO-L ACK / NOACK
(send you acknowledgment when you post to the list)
SET ANTHRO-L REPRO / NOREPRO
(send you a copy of what you post to the list)
SET ANTHRO-L CONCEAL / NOCONCEAL
(hide your name from public view as a subscriber)

C) MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LIST -
You can retrieve a list of subscribers (except those who are
"concealed") with REVIEW ANTHRO-L.

REVIEW ANTHRO-L BY COUNTRY
(membership breakdown by country)
STATS ANTHRO-L
(breakdown of how many messages each subscriber has posted)
INDEX ANTHRO-L
(list of all files, including the archive log-files)

D) USING THE ARCHIVES-
Should you want to do a little detective work, or if you accidentally
deleted an interesting message from the list, know that every message
posted to Anthro-l is immediately archived by the Listserver. There is
also an independent archive maintained by Danny Yee at the address:
http://danny.oz.au/anthropology/anthro-l/.

To get a copy of any message in the archives, you have two choices.
You can get the appropriate archive log-file from the Listserver, or
you can search and have the information emailed to you.

i) To get an archive log-file, get a list of the Anthro-l files by
sending INDEX ANTHRO-L. Then send the message GET ANTHRO-L LOGyymm
(yy is the last two digits of the year and mm the number of the month;
e.g. February 1963 would be ANTHRO-L LOG6302). Note that the archives
only go back to October 31, 1993.

ii) To search the archives by email, send the message GET ANTHRO-L
SEARCH and read the instructions.

E) HOW TO CITE ELECTRONIC MEDIA-
For guidance on how to cite messages posted or stored on the Internet,
send GET ANTHRO-L CITE.
