The field school concentrates on developing, first-hand, the basic
methodological tools of the anthropologist. Students will have the
opportunity to examine the integration of prehistoric culture into
the modern setting by visiting prehistoric sites and by spending time
in contemporary and ancient Egyptian and Israeli settings. In Israel
the focus will be on the many different types of Jewish communities
including the kibbutz and the moshav as well as Haredi, Ethiopian,
Lubavitch, Hasidic, Zionist, and Sephardic neighborhoods. The four
holy cities of Hevron, Jerusalem, Tiberius, and Safed will be visited
as well as the Carmel Caves, Masada and communities and sites
throughout Jerusalem. It is hoped that a day trip to Petra, in
Jordan, will also be possible.

In Egypt, the tentative schedule includes trips to Alexandria, Hurghada,
Luxor, and Aswan as well as neigihborhoods in Cairo, the ancient
capital of Memphis, the Valley temples, the Great Pyramids, mosques,
Karnak, the Royal tombs, and a variety of markets.

Cost is approximately $4,000 plus tuition (includes airfare and most
meals).
