In addition to Rob Quinlan's post regarding deaf baby babble, there is an
interesting paper, I think by Byers et al., in Current Anthropolgy 35:4:369-381
(1994) about the possible origin of language in a visual communication system.
I really don't know what to make of it, but the connection between the hands,
language and thought would need to be pretty tight for this.
