Technically bees, ants etc are eusocial rather than social. The
difference is that they share a common reproductive interest --
i.e., the whole group acts like one organism. In social groups
reproductive interests of individuals do not overlap completely.
I imagine that intelligence comes in handy in sorting out where
others interests diverge from one's own.
