TOUR OF DUTY: TERM APPOINTMENT, NOT TO EXCEED THIRTEEN MONTHS

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: NATIONWIDE

DUTIES: RESPONSIBLE FOR CULTURAL RESOURCE SURVEYS ON THE DISTRICT INCLUDING
PREPARING FIELD METHODOLOGIES, SUPERVISING THREE ASSISTANTS (INCLUDING
TWO FIELD ASSISTANTS AND A STUDENT VOLUNTEER) IN PERFORMING
INVENTORIES TOTALING APPROXIMATELY 12,000 ACRES TO IDENTIFY AND RECORD
HISTORIC AND PREHISTORIC SITES. COMPLETES SITE FORMS AND WRITTEN
REPORTS ON THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATIONS AND MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS
TO THE FOREST ARCHAEOLOGIST REGARDING SITE SIGNIFICANCE AND
APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES.

QUALIFICATIONS: PER OPM X-118 HANDBOOK - APPLICANT MUST MEET THE BASIC ENTRY
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND HAVE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AND/OR DIRECTLY
RELATED EDUCATION AS FOLLOWS:


BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

A. 1. DEGREE: THAT INCLUDED 3 SEMESTER HOURS EACH IN THE FOLLOWING COURSE
AREAS: HISTORY OF ARCHEOLOGY; ARCHEOLOGY OF A MAJOR GEOGRAPHICAL AREA;
REGIONAL ARCHEOLOGY, ARCHEOLOGICAL CULTURES, OR SITES IN A SPEFICIC PART OR
PORTION OF A MAJOR GEOGRAPHICAL; THEORY AND METHODS OF ARCHEOLOGY;
ARCHEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL.

AND: SIX SEMESTER HOURS OF RELATED COURSE WORK IN: GEOGRAPHY,
GEOLOGY, OR CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY; HISTORY, HISTORIOGRAPHY, OR HISTORICAL
ARCHEOLOGY; ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES; SCIENTIFIC WRITING (NONFICTION
ENGLISH COMPOSITION); AND/OR SURVEYING.

AND: ARCHEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL.

OR

2. RELATED CURRICULUM - DEGREE IN ANTHROPOLOGY (WITH EMPHASIS ON
ETHNOLOGY, PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, OR SCIENTIFIC LINGUISTICS), HISTORY,
AMERICAN STUDIES, OR A RELATED DISCIPLINE.

OR
B. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE -- COLLEGE-LEVE EDUCATION OR
TRAINING THAT PROVIDED KNOWLEDGE EQUIVALENT TO THAT DESCRIBED IN A ABOVE, PLUS
APPROPRIATE TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE OR ADDITIONAL EDUCATION.

C. EXPERIENCE -- FOUR YEARS OF ARCHEOLOGICAL WORK EXPERIENCE THAT DEMONSTRATED
A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES AND THEORIES OF PROFESSIONAL
ARCHEOLOGY.

IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, APPLICANTS MUST HAVE EITHER ONE
FULL YEAR OF GRADUATE-LEVEL EDUCATION OR SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OR ONE
YEAR OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE WHICH IS AT LEAST EQUIVALENT TO THE GS-5 LEVEL.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: IS EXPERIENCE WHICH HAS EQUIPPED THE APPLICANT
WITH THE PARTICULAR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES TO PERFORM
SUCCESSFULLY THE DUTIES OF THE POSITION AND WHICH IS TYPICALLY IN OR
RELATED TO THE WORK OF THE POSITION TO BE FILLED.

EVALUATION CRITERIA: APPLICANTS WILL BE EVALUATED ON THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

1. KNOWLEDGE OF CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL METHODS, THEORIES, PRINCIPLES, AND
PRACTICES.

2. KNOWLEDGE OF FEDERAL LAWS, REGULATIONS, AND POLICIES FOR CULTURAL
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.

3. ABILITY (AS MEASURED BY EXPERIENCE) TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
AND SUPERVISE OTHERS IN PERFORMING CULTURAL RESOURCE SURVEYS.

4. ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY INTEGRATE MULTIPLE USE CONSIDERATIONS IN
CARRYING OUT ASSIGNMENTS.

5. ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY IN WRITING TO PREPARE FIELD NOTES
AND TECHNICAL REPORTS.


METHOD OF EVALUATION: PROMOTION PANEL MEMBERS OR PERSONNEL SPECIALIST WILL
EVALUATE EACH CANDIDATE'S QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDING EXPERIENCE, PERFORMANCE,
