"Dumb" Definitions? Apology

Messages both public and private have shown how unwarranted was my
reference, last week, to certain definitions of culture as "dumb." Quite
a lot of thought supports some of them, and though their proponents have
not much diminished my skepticism about the value of defining culture in
mentalistic terms, I want to retract, and say I am sorry for, the way I
characterized them. --Bob Graber
