LECTURER - ARCHAEOLOGY (equivalent to ASSISTANT PROFESSOR in North America)
Department of Anthropology and Archaeology
James Cook University of North Queensland, Australia
The Department, with Bruce Kapferer as Foundation Professor of Anthropology
and Head, offers joint programs in Archaeology and Anthropology and has
strong research and teaching interests in Asia, the Pacific and Australia.
The Department has been successful in obtaining ARC Multi-year Large Grants
(totalling more than $(A)450,000) for major research projects in
Archaeology and Anthropology in Australia, Melanesia and Indonesia. As of
1996 a joint applied coursework program for the new Masters in Cultural
Heritage Studies is offered. Development of this Masters was funded by a
CAUT Grant ($(A)100,000).
The appointee will be required to teach and undertake research in at least
one of the following areas: Archaeology of Australia, Archaeology of
Melanesia, Cultural Heritage Studies, Ethnoarchaeology, Historical
Archaeology and/or Maritime Archaeology. Administrative duties will also be
involved. Although based at Townsville, the appointee may be required to
teach at both the Townsville and Cairns campuses.
Applicants must have a PhD in Archaeology or be able to demonstrate
substantial progress towards one. A record of scholarly and professional
achievement, including effective teaching skills to deal with a broad range
of students in BA and BSc programs, as well as Arts and Science
postgraduate programs, is required. An ability to work collaboratively on
team research projects is desirable, and the provision of a teaching
portfolio as part of the application would be advantageous.

TENURE: The position is available from 1 July 1996 for a probationary
period of three years, with provision for conversion to tenure.
SALARY: Academic Level B $(A)43,042 to $(A)51,113 per annum. Commencing
salary according to qualifications and experience.
