Spouse discussion

As a lesbian in a homosexual marriage and an anthropologist, this
discussion of spouse is quite interesting. I'm not a linguist,
but don't word definitions change over time? I call my mate, partner
or wife depending on the context and certainly consider her my
spouse. What is fascinating to me is the apparent need to
distinguish linguistically between those couples who reproduce "easily" and those
who do not. What is at the root of this need? Why are our
gender/sex categories so rigid in the industrial West?
