One place I've come across this concept is Karl Heider's _Grand Valley
Dani: Peaceful Warriors_. In it he argues that the people of this society
have "extraordinarily little interest in sex" and he attributes that fact
to "low psychic energy." Part of his evidence is a postpartum period of
sexual abstinence of about five years. In the Bibliography he lists another
publication of his (which I haven't read) which deals with this more fully.
He also mentions that his observations and conclusions were
controversial...
