Try Roman Jakobsen and the binary opposition feature systems of phonological
theory as one major source; also, Levi-Strauss' own citation of
Durkheim & Mauss;
and re-read
Almeida 1990. Mathematical Metaphors in the Work of Levi-Strauss.
CURRENT ANTHROPOLOGY 31 + discussion
for an interesting, but incomplete, listing of sources.
Levi-Strauss' use of transformations in Mythologique are mostly mappings
and transformations across cultural boundries (S.America to N. America
& back again). This usage does not really compare well with Chomsky's
past usage of transformations except when L-S is comparing myths within
a single society.
