Applied anthropology

I agree with Douglas Hanson and Mike Gurstein that the non academic
workplace is where anthropology has its greatest potential and that it can
also serve as a stabilizing force in the academic end of anthropology. One
of the major problems is getting young students to believe this is true,
and the second major problem is getting faculty at major institutions to
recognize that there is life outside of academe. Social reproduction is the
name of the game here, no matter how irrelevant some of our directions in
the academic arena. Time and the marketplace might cure this trend, but who
knows.
