I guess what I really meant by usefulness is perceived utility. Fore
cannibalism is a good example. Fore women had trouble getting sufficient
protein so they picked up on the cannibalism idea. The fact that is was
maladaptive was an unforseeable consequence of the behavior.
Memes forced on others are true parasites, but they have percieved utility for
those forcing them on others.
This is where I start to get really uncomfortable about meme theory. As I said
I'm not sure it's a good idea to view culture as an agregate of traits. Surely
not all cultural traits qualify as replicators. I don't know though.
