I teach various "world music" courses in a college for working adults.
Part of my course requirements is attending three "gigs" and reporting on
them. My firm requirement on "gigs" is that both the culture and the
musical genre be unfamiliar to the student. The rationale, I tell them,
is to "expand their horizons", "stretch their comfort zones", etc.
I get resistance at first, but by the end of the course, the value of
this hard-line is shared by all.
