In reponse to Dan and others,
There is a reocurring rumour that CIDA will not hire
anthropologists. Why? "Because they are just too difficult!" Better to hire
a cultural geographer or some such. Why are they difficult (seeker1, this
is for you), because they are a bit too concerned with the epistemology of
research into and the development of .... er, development. Nobody likes a
critical voice, unless it will shut up on cue. So lets not all jump on the
applied band wagon quite so quickly. If I wanted to eat shit (as a steady
diet) I would have been a Lawyer. I overstate my case (obviously), but
nonetheless, what attracted me to anthropology was not the
opportunity to make myself useful to the powers that be (left or
right), but to clear thinking (semi-pomo style), and the basis for action
which results.
