Leakey's Legs

The story I heard was that Richard crashed the plane he was flying and did a
nice job of shattering both legs. This was on the eve of the decision of
some sort of major funding proposal, and they kept his condition a secret
until the decision had been made. I heard at least one leg was amputated
below the knee because of the delay in care, and have heard rumors that a
second was also.
All in all, I think I would rather be poor and keep my legs.
