assume that Canadians all agree on (for example) "peace and order" at the
expense of "freedom of speech" (which naturally all Americans favour).

It's worth pointing out that the major Canadian TV networks and
several influential newspapers are in court trying to have the publication
ban lifted. Their arguments about freedom of the press are no different
from American ones. But their valuing freedom of the press is *not* a
matter of American cultural influence.
