I am teaching a course in economic anthropology this fall and hope that
some of you reading this list will suggest readings in a couple of areas.
1) Anything on the domestication of tobacco, and what is known about
pre-Colombian geographic distribution. I would appreciate any citations
for East Coast Native American tobacco production, exchange, consumption
of tobacco.
2) Anything on how the Maya from the Tikal and El Mirador areas farmed,
managed their resource base, trade. I would appreciate hearing from
anyone who has ever been to El Mirador, I am looking into taking a small
group there between semesters.
Some time back there was a posting from two economic anthropologists
inquiring, and I don't remember the exact wording, what impact
postmodernism has had on economic anthropology. I don't remember this
creating a lot of discussion. Let me be more specific - do you think
*Sons of the Sea Goddess* by Robben (1989) is a good example of this?
What others are there, and which would be useful for undergraduates.
I look forward to hearing from some of you.
