I am just now reading Paul Riesman's book "First Find Your Child a Good
Mother" (I have to read it, since I assigned it for my household & gender
seminar this fall) 1992, Rutgers. The book is essentially a careful
ethnography of emotion among the Fulani, but as in most ethnography,
emotion and personality often get melded and mixed up. Medick and Sabean
"Interest and Emotion" has some historical material. Michelle Rosaldo and
Renato also have written quite a bit about the importance of
understanding emotion. They have alittle article about Red Hronbill
Earrings back in a 1990 or so Cultural Anthropology that gets most of
their insights into a small package.
