origin of "dream catchers"

A colleague of mine recently asked me about the "dream catchers" and their
origins. I know nothing about them, except that I've seen them for sale
in gift shops and catalogues that sell Native American crafts occasionally.
Does anyone have some information and/or references on where and when they
