Commenting on Matt's discussion of `meanings' - I disagree . . . there is a
new body of literature coming out that deals with the discrenment of meaning
cross-culturally. Relevant names are David R. Heise, Alex Durig, Andreas
Schneider, Neil MacKinnon et al. Heise has a beautiful little computer program
called INTERACT (query the author at Heise@indiana.edu) which has data bases
from five or so cultures . . . and works off of principles laid out in Affect
Control Theory . . . . MacKinnon has an interesting new book "Affect Control
Theory as Symbolic Interaction." which should be required reading for any
body interested in meaning systems.

Durig will have a book out soon (if not already) specifically dealing with
meaning systems.

Sceptical or not, it actually can be done to a limited degree.
