INVITATION AND CALL FOR PAPERS

We cordially invite you to attend the 1996 joint conference of the Pan
African Anthropological Association and
the Association for Anthropology in Southern Africa.

THEME

Anthropology and the Social Transformation of Africa

ISSUES FOR DEBATE

Since the theme focuses on how anthropology interfaces with some of
the social issues facing the African continent, the conference calls for
papers, amongst others in the following areas: health, population
processes and reproductive health; development and its environmental
impact; ethnic pluralism and urban integration; gender and the
empowerment of women, and issues in the emergence of a new South
Africa. These themes will be considered from both theoretical and
applied perspectives.

Accordingly the following subthemes have been identified for the
conference:

1.Anthropology and major Health Problems
2.Population Processes and Reproductive Health
3.Ethnic Pluralism and Urban Integration
4.Development and its Social and Environmental Implications
5.Gender and the Empowerment of Women: Post-Beijing Challenges

Persons wishing to organise an independent session around a theme
other than those listed above, must please contact the Conference
Committee. Such sessions should however, relate to the general
conference theme.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

The aim of the conference is to define more clearly problems facing the
African continent and to assess the role of anthropology in contributing
towards their solutions. The conference offers anthropologists the
opportunity to exchange ideas, build networks and demonstrate ways in
which some of the problems can be approached from a practical angle.
The conference intends to achieve the following objectives: To
* permit other African scholars to discover anthropological research in a
* South Africa that was previously isolated by apartheid
* establish new research networks around some of the major issues
confronting the discipline in Africa
* exchange views on the teaching and practice of anthropology, and
ways of improving these activities
* discuss ways of applying anthropology in addressing the problems
encountered by African countries.

CONFERENCE FEE

All participants are required to pay a conference fee, which is as
follows:

Before June 30, 1996

PAAA/AASA Members $50 (R190,00)
Non-PAAA/AASA Members $60 (R225,00)
Students $25 (R95,00)

After June 30, 1996

PAAA/AASA Members $70 (R260,00)
Non-PAAA/AASA Members $80 (R300,00)
Students $35 (R130,00)

Please note that in the case of cancellation the following applies:

* Cancellation before July 31, 1996: 50% of fee will be refunded
* Cancellation after July 31, 1996: No fees will be refunded.

The registration fee includes the conference folder containing the
program, copies of abstracts and papers, and other documentation,
lunches, teas as well as the costs of the cocktail party and conference
dinner.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The Conference Committee has extremely limited funds to assist
participants who do not have funding or access to funding, but has in
principle decided to endeavour to cover the travel and per diem costs for
a few exceptional and deserving individuals. Persons requiring
assistance must apply before May 15, 1996. Considerations for
assistance will be done on the basis of merit and will only be provided on
submission, BEFORE JULY 31, 1996, of the complete paper to be
presented at the conference.

DEADLINES

* Submission of titles and abstracts of papers: May 15, 1996

* Submission of final papers and diskettes: July 31, 1996

* Applications and submission of final papers for
participants wishing to apply for assistance: July 31, 1996

The Conference Organisers will present all participants with a copy of
each paper presented during the conference. To do so the following
stipulations apply:

If you submit your final paper before July 31, you need only send us a
single copy and the Conference Organisers will make copies of your
paper. If you do not send a single copy before July 31, that is, you submit
your final paper after 31 July, you are required to send us 50 (fifty)
copies.

GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS

Length of abstracts and papers

The length of abstracts is restricted to 300 words.

Presenters will be allowed 20 minutes for presentation of their papers.
The length of papers is therefore, limited to
approximately 4000 words.

Format of papers

One printed copy of your paper is required as well as a copy on a
diskette. Place your document on the diskette
in Wordperfect 5.1, Wordperfect for Windows or as an ASCII file.

The following information must appear on a separate title page:

* Title of paper

* Your name

* Affiliation (University or other Institution)
