Thanks much to those who responded to my query on the source of the WG Sumner
quote. Hofstadter does indeed use it in this Social Darwinism book. For
anyone interested, here's what I found out:

The quote is from an essay called "The concentration of wealth: its economic
justification" It was originally published in 1902 in _The(?) Independent_.
It is collected in the 1914 book _The Challenge of Facts and Other Essays_ and
in the 1963 volume _Social Darwinism: selected essays of William Graham
Sumner_.

Thanks to those who responded to my question about the number of societies
represented in HRAF in 1950. We still don't have an answer to that but we're
getting close.
