concerned individuals who support peace in Rwanda. This is, I think,
of particular interest to Anthropologists (I am one myself!) as well
as primatologists interested in the safety of the mountain gorillas.
Following is the "packet" of information that I have been posting
to various lists.
Sincerely,

Dear Anthropologists,

Following is a letter asking for help circulating
petitions for Peace in Rwanda. It precedes a cover letter and
the petition itself that is being circulated by Parners in
Conservation at the Columbus Zoo and The Dian Fossey Gorilla
Fund. The first time petitions were circulated in the fall
of 1990 over 70,000 signatures were collected in two months.
All sides agreed that the petitions were a contributing factor
in the signing of the cease fire in 1992.
Please make as many hard copies of the petition as you
like and circulate them. Signed copies of the petition should
be returned to Charlene Jendry, Columbus Zoo, 9990 Riverside Drive,
Powell, Ohio 43065 by JUNE 15, 1994.

Any questions/comments over the internet can be directed
to mcmahon@primate.wisc.edu

Thank you,
Laura McMahon

A PETITION FOR PEACE IN RWANDA -- YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

News reports from Rwanda are devastating...estimates of
100,000 dead and 2 million homeless since Aril 6, 1994...most
innocent victims of a civil war. You can do something to help!
Please copy and distribute the enclosed "A Petition for Peace in
Rwanda" to colleagues, friends, family, businesses, museums, uni-
versities, churches, schools, electronic mail systems, etc...be
creative. If each of us uses our own networking system, we can be
a formidable force. The situation in Rwanda is grave and hundreds
of thousands of signatures are urgently needed!

Ask people to contact as many schools as they can, as this is
an excellent way for children to not only learn about conservation
but also to be actively involved. The signatures of children can
have a significant impact on world leaders.

Together we can let world leaders know that there are hundreds
of thousands of people who really do care about the people, land
and the endangered mountain gorillas of Rwanda.

Thank you,

Dear Friends,

Right now, you may have the opportunity to help save a country and an
endangered species. As many as 100,000 people have died in the last
few weeks. The lives of many more are threatened. The beautiful
country of Rwanda is in conflict. The lives of many people are at
risk. And the world's last mountain gorillas are in danger.

Attached is a "Petition for Peace in Rwanda". Please copy the petition
form and distribute it in your area. Urge your friends and neighbors
to sign it. Contact your neighborhood schools. Help children
participate in this effort to save the people and the mountain gorillas
who live in Rwanda.

Please act quickly. Many people are dying. Unique wildlife is at risk.
Before this conflict, about 320 of the last mountain gorillas were
living quietly with their families, deep in the Rwandan rainforest.
But, because of the fighting, it has been difficult to protect them.
Now, we don't know if the gorillas will survive.

Your signature can make a difference. Your petition, along with
petitions from thousands of others who care about people and gorillas
in Rwanda, will be delivered to U.S. President Bill Clinton, to the
U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, to representatives of
the European Community, and to Rwandan political representatives.
Please help end this conflict. Circulate a petition today.

Sincerely,
