UNEARTHING THE VANISHED PRESIDIO OF SAN DIEGO - 1994
The San Diego Historical Society and the Center for Spanish Colonial
Archaeology, Inc. announces a PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION AND WORKSHOP
MAY 9 - JULY 16, 1994.
Ongoing research into San Diego's early history is producing a wealth of
documents and material remains that suggest that the social fabric and daily
life that occurred in early California was far more complex and varied than
has been previously thought. Historical archaeology provides a unique
opportunity to gain a firsthand glimpse into the lost world of Spanish
colonial San Diego. In response to the growing interest by the public in the
legendary presidio, the UNEARTHING THE VANISHED PRESIDIO OF SAN DIEGO program
has been created. Through participation in the project, individuals will have
an opportunity to participate in an excavation and learn more about how
archaeologists recover information about the past.
The program includes a series of four lectures, held on May 9-12 at the
Junipero Serra Museum, that provide important background information about the
process of archaeological investigation. These lectures are designed to
introduce important general ideas about historical archaeology and to prepare
those wishing to participate for their parts in the excavation. The dig will
take place on weekends, and weekdays, during May, June, and July. Participants
will work in the northeastern area of the presidio ruins, under the
supervision of Dr. Jack S. Williams, the project director. The excavators will
also work in the project's field lab, where artifacts will be washed, weighed,
and measured. During the following October, the excavation crew and other
participants are invited to participate in a public forum on the results of
the project and their experiences.
The sponsors of the project invite application for participation from
people, high school age and up. The cost of the excavation program is $50.00.
The lecture portion in free. Those wishing to participate on the dig should
plan to attend the workshops. Those not wishing to excavate, but who want to
learn more about historical archaeology, are welcome to attend the lectures.
Participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend as many sessions as
possible.
DEADLINE for receipt of application is May 1, 1994. Early application is
