At present, the prospects for academic careers are not too good, as
anthropology enrollments are half what they were in the '70's. I have
good friends who are very disappointed, and I'm glad I turned down a
career in teaching. Careers in applied anthropology are out there, but
many applied anthropologists who are not in academia live from contract to
contract. If your son wants to be an applied anthropologist, the best
thing to do is to get a graduate degree in applied anthropology from the
University of South Florida in Tampa. However, he could take a Masters in
another field, like Social Work or psychology (if he can get into a grad
program) and be employable and still use his knowledge of anthropology for
the good of others.
