"Ireland's Medieval Dysert Castle," an excavation sponsored by the
University Research Expeditions Project, University of California at
Berkeley, is seeking a crew chief for the 1996 field season. This second
season of excavation of a structure on the grounds of the late medieval
Irish castle of Dysert O'Dea, Corofin, Co. Clare, Ireland, will run from
the middle of June through the beginning of August, 1996. The excavation
is directed by Dr. D. Blair Gibson, Research Affiliate and U.C.L.A., and
Mr. Risteard Ua Croinin, Director of the Dysert Archaeology Centre, as
well as two crew chiefs (I am one of them). The site will be excavated
by volunteers from both the United States (under the auspices of UREP)
and Ireland (volunteers from the Shannon Archaeological and Historical
Society).

Air and field transportation as well as room and board will be provided;
however, no stipend is available. Accommodations will be shared (both
for staff and project participants), and staff and participants will also
share cooking and cleaning duties. As a crew chief the duties will
include excavation, processing and cataloging of finds, as well as
helping with other staff responsibilities (possibly shopping,
transportation, etc.). The data obtained may be used for an M.A. thesis
or dissertation.

Applicants must have at least one season of excavation experience or have
been to an archaeological field school. Please send a letter and c.v. to:

Dr. D. Blair Gibson
13313 Strathern St.
North Hollywood, CA 91605

Any questions may be directed either to Dr. Gibson or by email to me,
Maura Smale, the other crew chief, at: mas5815@is2.nyu.edu. Please do
not post replies to this list as I do not subscribe to it. Thank you.
