The Mayans developed a calendar based upon when the planet Venus
returns to similar positions in the sky. This results in cycles
and supercycles of about 1.5 years, 60 years, and 3000 years, etc.
(My numbers may be off.) In much the same way other cultures
make "odometer" predictions, e.g. Christians 1999->2000,
both the Mayans and some of their new-age enthusiasts follow
Mayan calander supercycles. A minor cycle completed in 1987
in what new agers called the Harmonic Convergence.
A major supercycle completes sometime in the 21st Christian century.
