Essential anthropology 'skills'

What qualities do you think make a good anthropologist?

Are there 'must read' books to a beginner interested in studying athropology
as a research discipline?

My closest encounter with anthropology was when I bumped into
Catherine Bateson's Peripheral Vision while browsing bookstores.
I have read her other books as well as a memoir for Mead.
My knowledge on anthrolopology has been in from general reading on books
and magazines like Discover, Science and Scientific America.

I would like to know more about serious anthropology to help me decide whether
it is the field which I want to get seriously involved with (grad studies).

Thanks a lot and keep 'constructive' discussions rolling!!
