Assuming a Ph.D. means anything, it's an indicator of achievement. I
would have more respect for someone with a Ph.D. from a reputable
university, but with IQ scores between 90 and 100, than I would for
a member of the Mega Society who's also a high-school dropout.

I don't have a Ph.D. (although I am working on an M.A.). I once looked
into joining Mensa, but decided that anyone who would pay their
exorbitant entrance fee should be automatically barred from joining. :-)
