Let me add another voice to this discussion. I've been out of
the academic arena for a long time. I received my PhD in social
anthro in 1969 and have been working as an applied anthro in
the private sector (marketing and media) ever since. I never
intended to teach, and at the time I was in grad school this
was unusual. In the years I have been out doing anthro for a
living outside of the academic environment, I've had to create
my own jobs. While I do "anthro" for a living, most of my
clients don't really know its "anthro". They just think I'm
another researcher helping them make money.

I think there's lots of room in the private sector (business)
for anthro educated people.
