I will try to sum up the basic ideas of Origins of Consciousness in the
Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind:

Humans were once what is now known as "schizophrenic." That is, humans did
not have integrated minds, and so no sense of "I". They obeyed the
"voices" that they heard, which they believed were either their ancestors
or gods. Due to culture clashes caused by expanding populations, those who
had a more integrated sense of self (and therefore were able to lie and
dissemble while dealing with a conqueror/slave-master/boss) were more
likely to survive and pass on their genes, which caused the breakdown of
the bicameral mind.

Another aspect of Origins is a discussion of the nature of "self"
consciousness and how learning and retrieving information are not dependent
on consciousness and how narrative is the foundation for non-schizophrenic
minds.

OK. It's been a few years at least since I read it. Did I overlook
anything?

BRIAN: I'm not the Messiah! Will you please listen? I am not the Messiah,
do you understand?! Honestly!

FOLLOWER: Only the true Messiah denies His divinity.

BRIAN: What?! Well, what sort of chance does that give me? All right! I am
the Messiah!

FOLLOWERS: He is! He is the Messiah!

BRIAN: Now, fuck off!

[silence]

ARTHUR: How shall we fuck off, O Lord?
