I think the kiss is used to signal the hormonal milieu of the individuals.
Since my work suggests that testosterone is very important to hominid evolution
and that testosterone is known to stimulate libido in both sexes, I think the
kiss is designed to stimulate the one of lower testosterone the female, as well
as give us information. Human saliva mirrors the steroid hormones of blood
plasma so well that saliva tests of hormone levels are often used to measure
these. The kiss, especially when saliva is transferred, may tell us a lot about
the object of our affections.
