This is not my field, and I have no citations available,
but this may help at least a little bit.

When I was a child (in New York), my mother (who is from
Western North Carolina originally) used to talk about
certain "hillbilly" women who ate a certain kind of clay.
When thay moved into town, they would eat a paste made of
water and laundry starch which was the same consistency.

Strictly hearsay, I admit, but there may be some written
record of it. It may have been just a canard, but at any rate,
the story didn't originate with my mother.
