It is true that science has always been at the mercy of the politcal powers of
the day for funding and, as a result, the discoveries of science have been
turned to weapons of war.

The scientist must pursue science for its own sake if the Human Race is to
truly benefit from his/her efforts.

Landing on the moon was the greatest acheivement of the Human Race, yet today
it is dismissed out of hand. Many, if not most, of the tools found in a
typical kitchen were "spin offs" of the pure reseach developed and applied for
the Apollo missions. The computers we have in our homes grew out of the need
for compact machines which could travel into space, the navigational systems on
comercial aircraft came from the same technology that landed on the Moon and
then returned to Earth!

Don't let the politicians fool you. The "Peace Dividend" left over from the
cold war would be much better spent on scientific research than on the politcal
agends of a handful of lawyers in Washington, DC.
