I recently read an article by Robbie Davis-Floyd (the article was based
on her study "Birth as an American Rite of Passage") in which she posits
that the pregnancy-birth process is a rite of passage. My question is, if
this "birth ritual" is disrupted through miscarriage or abortion, may such
things as post-miscarriage/abortion syndromes be seen as a result of the
failure of the ritual to be completed? If so, it seems this idea would
be reflected in other rites of passage as well, I'd be interested in any
other examples inside or outside american culture.

Thanks,
Jim
