The Golden Bough by Frazier -- any merit?

The Golden Bough by Frazier is famous for having inspired some of T.S.
Eliot's poetry (among others). I picked up a copy, and it is
fascinating. However, given its early 1900s origin, I am naturally
suspicious about the veracity of its many assertions. Does it have any
merit whatsoever?
