Pardon me if I'm a little late in the discussion. I believe geophagia
would be considered a pica (not in the typesetting sense, however). I've heard
of it reported in rural and economically deprived areas, especially among
women. I also recall something to the effect that pregnant women would eat
mud either ceremonially or cmpulsively, and the theory is that it provided
missing minerals.
This may all be scientific folklore by now, but it made an impression on me
when I first heard about it as a kid in the 60s.
