Very low--very few mammals have made it into Australia across a 40 km sea
barrier. On the other hand, Australia and New Guinea appear to be the
venue of the earliest modern H. sapiens (defined culturally and narrowly).

Yes. Recent publications in Nature.

By the way, homonid is incorrect. I suspect you mean hominid--defined
basically as bipedal members of the African Ape clade.
