I can't even begin to understand why anyone would
even think that it would be difficult to create
an emotionally distressing situation for animals.

Catch a wild animal and put it in a cage. That should
be enough of an emotional disturbance. If not, then
there are zillions of ways of disturbing it, even to
early death.
