Just to add something else interesting, my tutor (Robin Dennell) tells me
he believes that Gigantopithecus was making tools. They apparently
survive up to 1 mya in eastern Asia/ Indochina, which would mean they
were well contemporary with H. erectus (who, incidentally, is not a
toolmaker in Asia as far as we know). Having a twelve foot ape wandering
around making tools sounds unlikely to me, but my tutor is so darn clever
I feel obliged to believe him!
