For a neat take on the above see Tattersall's _The fossil Trail_, on page
74:

"Since the Australopithecinae died out in Africa, while the gorilla and
chimpanzee survived, it would appear that a through-going ape is better
than half a man".

This out of contexts quote touches on the problems we have in defining
"human".
