Advice in paleoanthropology

I am a phsycian (Clinical Geneticist) who wants to switch careers to
physical anthropology. I am in the process of reading everything I
can get my hands on and am learning molecular biology protocols (ie
pcr, extraction of DNA from archival and hopefully fossilized
specimens). I am not, however, in a position to leave my job and go
to graduate school elsewhere (there's no graduate program in
anthropolgy where I am). Any suggestions for pursuing my career goals
short of moving? I am ultimately interested in origins of man in the
Western Hemisphere both with fossil and archeological data and DNA
data specifically mitochondrial.
