I wonder if he might instead be referring to "Homo faber" [sp?], which
was not an actual being but rather a concept, of human as tool-maker.
I forget the originator of the term.

At any rate, habilis was likely not the first stone-tool maker, much
less tools in general. For that matter, the transitional hominid may
not have been the "first tool maker", given what we know about extensive
use and making of tools by chimps (not to mention quite a few other
animals [for use of tools at least]).
