Allow me to show off my ignorance.

What is the body size difference?

Were the piths really enough smarter than the coexisting apes to beat
them in a game of food competition? If they were truely competing, i.e.
there was a limited food supply ... well they are competing for vegetible
matter which doesn't need intellegence to gather (does it?) So they would
have to fight for it.
