Wading or swimming?

I'm a little confused about the AAT support I've been reading. I get the
overall impression that the AAT attributes many of the major events in human
evolution to the pressures of wading in water. Then, every once in a while, I
read something about how a particular characteristic would be adaptive to
swimming. Was human evolution driven by wading or swimming or both?
