There was a very good review of the issues being discussed in this thread
that was published in American Anthropologist. If anyone is interested
the article is The Fossil Evidence for Modern Human Origins in Africa:
A Revised View by Leslie C. Aiello. American Anthropologist 1993 Vol
95 No 1 pgs 73-96.

Basically Aiello reviews the four main models explaining modern human
origins. The only area where these models agree is that there was
an initial migration out of Africa in the late Lower Pleistocene or
Middle Pleistocene period which resulted in the first appearance of
Homo erectus in Eurasia.
