Been rereading, and to my surprise, thoroughly enjoying Leslie White's
Science of Culture. Looking to read any (any being a few well chosen)
critiques of White's ideas that might have appeared recently (any time
in the past 20 years). Any suggestions?

In addition, I found his chapter on ancient Egypt 'Ikhnaton' with its
critique of the role of individuals, in particular the role of great men
in history, especially convincing. Attempts to reduce cultural phenomena
to individuals, as several people on the list are wont to do, seem ot
miss the point of what culture is about. Having read that particular
chapter I am also interested in locating a solid history of ancient
Egypt that deals with the struggles between religious and political (royal)
institutions. Any suggestions?
